When to Skip a Textbook Setup

Why a perfect chart pattern can still be a pass—and how to write that pass into your rules.

Desk with charts and analytical documents

Students often ask why instructors skip charts that match the handout. The answer is context: adjacent levels, session liquidity, and recent emotional capital matter as much as the pattern.

We teach a skip list: news within two hours of the planned entry, overlapping prior day’s range with no directional close, and personal daily loss limit already touched. Any one item voids the trade regardless of beauty on the chart.

Writing skips into the checklist removes guilt. A skipped textbook setup is process success, not missed profit. That framing keeps size disciplined the next day.

Workshop graduates practice verbalizing the skip reason aloud before closing the chart. Clarity of speech usually mirrors clarity of risk.
